The San Antonio name comes from of the Spanish explorer on June 13, 1691. Father Damian Massanet wrote in his diary on June 13, 1691: On that day, there were so many buffaloes that the horses were trampled and 40 of them ran. This was collected with the rest of the horses by hard work on the part of the soldiers. We found in this place an Indian rancheria of the Payaya nation. This is a very big country and the country they live in is very good. I call this place San Antonio de Padua, because that was the era. In Indian it is called Yanaguana
Domingo Teran de los Rios, expedition leader and governor of Coahuila y Texas, mentioned above by Father Massanet, also wrote a report on the discovery and naming of the place.
On the 13th, our royal encampment advanced towards the east mentioned above. We camped on the edge of the arroyo, which was dotted with trees, cedar, willow, cypress, osier, oak, and many other kinds.
This I call San Antonio de Padua, because we have achieved it in his time. Here we find a certain rancheria where the Payaya people live. We observed their actions, and I found that they were receptive and affectionate, naturally friendly, and decidedly agreeable to us.
The second expedition to Rio San Antonio arrived on April 13, 1709. Father Isidro Felix de Espinosa, accompanied by Father Antonio Olivares, came to the northern part of New Spain with an expedition led by Captain Pedro de Aguirre, commander of the presidio of Rio Grande del Norte.
Finally, nine years later in 1718, an expedition led by Don Martin de Alarcon, Governor of Coahuila y Texas, reached the same area. The group's daily writer, Pastor Francisco Celiz, wrote of San Pedro Springs that, "in this place of San Antonio there is a spring about three-quarters of a league from the main river.
On May 5, the governor, in the name of the kingdom, took over the place called San Antonio, establishing himself in it, This site is further dedicated to civilian settlements and the soldiers guarding it, as well as sites for missions.
So that's how San Antonio got its name in 1691 and it was officially founded on May 1, 1718 . Today san antonio remains a very beautiful landscape go to website of san antonio today.
